Feedback for educators

Kris's picture

Hey, this is my first blog ever---wow.  OK, so I had the wonderful experience of being asked by a school administrator for any feedback I might have as a parent of a kid with ASD about the general school environment.  How sensitive it is to kids who might have sensory issues?  How the transitions work?  And anything about the overall environment that could be improved.

Of course, I told him I would love to give some input and will schedule a time to spend most of a day in the school to learn how things flow now.  But this made me think...has anyone been involved with making a "workbook" so to speak or guidebook for schools that include considerations about the environment and staff that would help kids on the spectrum?  It seems to me someone has mentioned this before (?).  I know some of you parents have even done an Autism 101 workshop for school staff.

Anyway, I would love to revive this and make it a group project.  Something we could bind and have available to schools.

Thoughts?

Workbook

Congratulations on your first blog post.

That's a really good idea. But your post has me thinking about a tangent.

What I did with my son's transition to Kindergarten was wrote a several page letter about him specficially and his needs. I did mention autism, but it wasn't intened as autism training as much as it was just training about my son.

I wonder if we as a club could put together some sort of template for parents to include during IEP meetings or first days of class to help out the teachers.

Something like:

My child enjoys _____ . My child has a special interest in ____. My child will  often get upset if ____.  When my child is upset they ____. We calm them down at home by doing _____. One approach that works is ____.

BTW - I've emailed the commenter above who was looking for info.
