Feedback for educators

Hey, this is my first blog ever---wow.  OK, so I had the wonderful experience of being asked by a school administrator for any feedback I might have as a parent of a kid with ASD about the general school environment.  How sensitive it is to kids who might have sensory issues?  How the transitions work?  And anything about the overall environment that could be improved.

Lucky mom

Every once in a while, it's nice to have a good pick-me-up. This blog entry on another site was just what I needed. The author writes about being a lucky mom and going from raising a non-verbal three year old to a college freshman.  I hope it brightens your day, too.

A Tank

Kiyan loves to draw on his magnadoodle. He draws all sorts of interesting things, and recently it's become a little easier to understand what he's saying about his drawings. Today he drew something and told me it was a tank.

A tank? He drew it again, this time talking to himself "See. A rectangle. Two lines, and then another rectangle" Oh. He was drawing a fish tank from a Blue's Clues episode. They always narrate the shapes as they draw things. Next he drew a very convincing handy dandy notebook complete with a thinking chair.

Why Girls May Be Misdiagnosed

I ran across this article on girls and Asperger Syndrome last year, but it's still a pretty good one.

It's Me - I'm on TV

I hate my hair. I combed my hair right before I went on, I swear!

About that domain name...

Websites have two pieces. The site itself and the domain. Websites are actually mapped out by a series of numbers, and that points to the specific computer on the Internet that hosts the Web page. That works awesome for computers but not so well for humans who have a hard enough time remembering lists of numbers for all the places we'd want to visit.

All about AAC

I had people ask about AAC and what it means.

What is AAC? It stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. It's any system of communication used as an alternative for those who can't produce it vocally. Lots of autistic children and adults rely on some form of AAC, whether it's a high tech computer device or a low tech system like picture exchanges and sign language.

We Just Got an AAC

Found out our AAC arrived in the mail today. I feel like I should start singing like Steve on Blue's Clues.

We just got a letter! We just got a letter!

Only it's more like:

We just got an AAC! We just got an AAC!

I wonder how it works! Yeah.
