Soooo happy:)

I'm so thankful I found this group.  After meeting some members that are very nice and support their children and other families and are spreading Autism awareness,  I feel lucky that we get to be apart of this wonderful group.  Looking forward to more chats and events and hopefully some play dates:)

Our next step

We have been trying to persuade our school to provide services for well over a year now.  Our first request for evaluation was in February of this year-- they refused to evaluate.  We took him to KU Medical Center where they confirmed the diagnosis and laid out recommendations for the school to follow up on.  We contacted the school and requested an evaluation again.  They began in April, but were unable to finish before the end of the school year.  In the meantime, there was a great deal of turnover in staff, and the evaluation was continued from where th

Diagnostic Categories. How much does it matter?

I'm interested in knowing people's thoughts about Asperger's Syndrome being folded into the general Autism Spectrum Disorder Diagnosis in the new version of the Diagnostic Statistical Manual.  Do you feel it's more helpful to have a distinct diagnosis?  Or that it might be easier to access services with a formal autism diagnosis?

Thoughts?

Feedback for educators

Hey, this is my first blog ever---wow.  OK, so I had the wonderful experience of being asked by a school administrator for any feedback I might have as a parent of a kid with ASD about the general school environment.  How sensitive it is to kids who might have sensory issues?  How the transitions work?  And anything about the overall environment that could be improved.

Lucky mom

A Tank

Kiyan loves to draw on his magnadoodle. He draws all sorts of interesting things, and recently it's become a little easier to understand what he's saying about his drawings. Today he drew something and told me it was a tank.

A tank? He drew it again, this time talking to himself "See. A rectangle. Two lines, and then another rectangle" Oh. He was drawing a fish tank from a Blue's Clues episode. They always narrate the shapes as they draw things. Next he drew a very convincing handy dandy notebook complete with a thinking chair.

Why Girls May Be Misdiagnosed

I ran across this article on girls and Asperger Syndrome last year, but it's still a pretty good one.
